The use of catnip leaves and flowers in herbal teas have been around since the early 1730s. Medicinally, it treats indigestion, intestinal cramps, diarrhea, colic, and colds. It also induces menstruation, increases appetite, relieves respiratory ailments, and acts as a sedative. Additionally, catnip can cure insomnia, relieve stress, soothe nervous disorders, and is a good remedy for bug bites.
Being transparent about the provenance of ingredients has become a hot button issue within the herbal products industry. More pressure is being brought to bear on companies that trade in endangered species, especially in high demand ones like Brazilian rosewood, to make sure that no corners are cut. The American Herbal Products Association provides a primer on how to legally trade in endangered species as a resource for members.  Ed Fletcher, a principal in the firm Herbal Ingenuity and who helped develop AHPA’s good harvesting practices, will participate in an NutraIngredients-USA webinar on Supply Chain Transparency, which airs tomorrow.  To register for the webinar, click here.
Perhaps one of the most well-known essential oils benefits is their ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Some essential oils have sedative properties and induce a calm, peaceful, uplifting and relaxed feeling. The best essential oils for anxiety and stress include lavender, Roman chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang, orange, rose, frankincense and vetiver.
We've covered a lot about aiding mood and mentality, but what about the more physical healing benefits of essential oils? Many plants are natural antiseptics, anti-inflammatories, antimicrobials, and antivirals, so when concentrated into essential oil form, they can function as highly effective remedies for acne, muscle soreness, sore throats, and more. Take ever-versatile peppermint oil, for example. "It's cooling, and can be found in formulated muscle care products along with eucalyptus, wintergreen, and German chamomile essential oils to name a few," Avery says. Try her go-to recipe for a DIY leg rub: "Add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to one ounce of sweet almond oil, and rub it into leg muscles and feet."
Kurt Schnaubelt is by far one of the best authorities on Essential Oils. This is one book you need to have in your library. Very informative and educational. A must if you plan to share essential oils and their uses with anyone even your own family. Too many today are teaching classes with no formal Aromatherapy training, dishing out false or misleading information and advising unsafe use and application of essential oils. Do yourself a favor and learn before you teach, at least know cautions and contraindications on the oils recommended.
If you read through the comments of Best Essential Oils Parts 2 & 3, you'll see that Young Living reps tout the fact that YL farms are in the U.S. as being an advantage–that it gives Young Living control over the whole process.  Maybe, but other companies like doTERRA and most of the other companies I've looked into have their oils sourced from wherever the plants grow naturally for higher quality.
Tea tree oil is a powerful antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic oil. Just a few drops mixed with a carrier oil is all you need to help treat cuts, scrapes, fungal infections, insect bites, warts and even dandruff. It can also be used as a powerful acne treatment when mixed with coconut oil or aloe vera gel.  Adding some to a vaporizer will also help loosen chest congestion. Tea tree oil is so powerful that mixing two teaspoons of oil in two cups of water will give you a safe, natural, all-purpose cleaner.

Herbs are used in many religions. During the monastic era, monks would cultivate herbs alongside vegetables, while others would be set aside in medicinal herb garden for specific purposes.[16] For example, myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) and frankincense (Boswellia species) in Hellenistic religion, the nine herbs charm in Anglo-Saxon paganism, neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves, bael (Aegele marmelos) leaves, holy basil or tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), turmeric or "haldi" (Curcuma longa), cannabis in Hinduism, and white sage in Wicca. Rastafari also consider cannabis to be a holy plant.
In aromatherapy and perfumery, Frankincense Essential Oil is considered an exclusive and highly desirable ingredient. Since ancient times, it has been used as incense and perfume, and as an exquisite cosmetic ingredient. It is considered the most valued oil for skincare products. This oil retains the sweet, warm and woody notes of the resin from which it is extracted.
Frances, many of the citrus oils and Rosemary 1,8 cineole can be used for focus. Rub a drop on your forehead and smell it. During the day you’ll be able to smell it sometimes too! For energy you can use Peppermint if you don’t have high blood pressure or babies at home. Rub a drop diluted with a drop of carrier oil (extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil or coconut oil) on your neck or forehead. Smell it also.
Frankincense essential oil often regulates estrogen production in women and reduces the risk of post-menopausal tumor or cyst formation in the uterus (uterine cancer). It also can regulate the menstrual cycle of premenopausal women. Frankincense essential oil is being studied for its potential to treat cancer. Scientists have observed that there’s an agent in this well-known spiritual essential oil that not only stops cancer from spreading, but also induces cancerous cells to close themselves down. Immunologist Mahmoud Suhail is hoping to open a new chapter in the history of frankincense.
The PhD author has qualifications in the technical and research applications of this mode of therapy. Medical Aromatherapy is the application of essential oils to prevent disease and promote health through the properties of the oil and the olfactory effect ( which is very close to the brain). This is a lengthy serious text for those immersed in the study of Complementary Medicine. A good grounding in high school chemistry is a firm foundation for what is essentially the application of organic compounds. The book presents a concise summary of basic medical conditions section and the application of these aromatic compounds as therapy.

There’s a wealth of information online about essential oils these days, but learning from a reliable source is so important, and vital! People often underestimate the strength of essential oils because they will sometimes think “if one drop is beneficial, five drops has got to be even better”, but they’re possibly going to cause harm to their skin and/or health by thinking that way.
In September 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Young Living against their consultants marketing its products as possible treatments or cures for Ebola virus,[5][6][22] and other conditions, including "Parkinson’s disease, autism, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, insomnia, heart disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dementia, and multiple sclerosis."[7][8] The letter named specific essential oil products, "such as, but not limited to, 'Thieves,' 'Cinnamon Bark,' 'Oregano,' 'ImmuPower,' 'Rosemary,' 'Myrtle,' 'Sandalwood,' 'Eucalyptus Blue,' 'Peppermint,' 'Ylang Ylang,' 'Frankincense,' and 'Orange,' are promoted for conditions that cause them to be drugs under section 201(g)(1)(B) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) [21 U.S.C. § 321(g)(1)(B)], because they are intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease."[8] The warning further stated that the marketing and distribution of these essential oil products as drugs by Young Living without FDA approval are violations of the Act.[8][23]
At first, doTerra’s distributors, whom it refers to as Wellness Advocates, were largely concentrated in Utah. Several doTerra executives are Mormons, and the company’s connection to the Church was an advantage, because distributors could rely on its large number of stay-at-home mothers and its naturally networked communities. Utah has more multilevel-marketing companies per capita than any other state; direct sales are Utah’s second-biggest source of revenue, after tourism. The Mormon Church also has a long-standing mistrust of federal oversight, which has made Utah a friendly home for businesses that operate outside medical norms. Attempts to regulate these industries are often portrayed as threats to individual freedom. In the nineties, during a battle over the regulation of dietary supplements, vitamin advocates paid for a TV ad starring a bewildered, bathrobed Mel Gibson, accosted in his kitchen by a SWAT team for having a bottle of vitamins. More recently, parents have begun refusing in large numbers to vaccinate their children; in Utah County, the hub of the state’s alternative-health industry, forty-three per cent of kindergartners have not received their full suite of vaccinations.
EXCELLENT BUY!! As a herbalist and soap maker, I use a variety of oils from various companies all over the world. The price for these was SO low that I thought, at the very least, I could use them for aroma therapy. They arrived in a beautifully designed box - professionally labeled and WOW was I STUNNED - the fragrance of each one showed very little difference from my finest oils that I have paid MUCH more for! As I am not a chemist - I cannot vouch for the percentages of each constituent, but I can tell you that the oils from the set that I have used thus far - have shown themselves to be just as effective as the high dollar bottle I have bought elsewhere! EXCELLENT Job - I sure hope they restock soon - I am buying MORE!
You market your Young Living Essential Oil products through paid consultants; your compensation plan for your consultants is explained on your website www.youngliving.com/en_US/opportunity/compensation-plan. Your consultants promote many of your Young Living Essential Oil Products for conditions such as, but not limited to, viral infections (including ebola), Parkinson’s disease, autism, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, insomnia, heart disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dementia, and multiple sclerosis, that are not amenable to self-diagnosis and treatment by individuals who are not medical practitioners. Consumers interested in your Young Living Essential Oil products are then redirected by your consultants to your website, http://www.youngliving.com, to purchase your products and/or register as members (i.e., consultants).[1]

Palo santo essential oil is widely used in folk medicine for stomach aches, as a sudorific, and as liniment for rheumatism. In one published Cuban medical study, components in the oil inhibited the growth of a specific type of breast cancer, MCF-7. Both palo santo and frankincense are spiritual essential oils used for emotional and spiritual support because they work as natural anxiety remedies.

The healing benefits of frankincense have traditionally centered on disease prevention and anti-inflammatory properties, and researchers have been able to confirm that boswellic acids contain a potent ability to modify the immune system as well. (3) Part of having a more efficient immune system is the regulation of inflammation, as well, which can have effects topically or systemically. (4)

If an oil is Certified Organic and you use it according to distributor AND reputable 3rd party recommendations then why would you want to or need to “personally visit their farms and view their distillation process”? There are many certified organic EO manufacturers scattered all around the world. To visit them all is preposterous, far fetched and a highly misleading piece of MLM propaganda possibly perpetuated by your own MLM company? Are you saying these hardworking businesses are not worthy of their organic accreditations and do not deserve to sell their products to other companies with an organic ethos – MLM or traditional? Perhaps it is you who “does not understand the EO market place or the blessings of the MLM industry”. It is unfounded and ignorant comments like yours that damage the wonderful MLM industry.

Oils are touted as something between a perfume and a potion, a substance that can keep you smelling nice while also providing physical and psychological benefits. They are often stocked on the same shelves as herbal remedies such as echinacea and St.-John’s-wort; big-box stores sell aromatherapy diffusers as an alternative to synthetic-smelling products like Febreze. The model Miranda Kerr used oils to help her get over her breakup with Orlando Bloom. The pop star Kesha tweeted that she starts off every day by sniffing essential oils: “They make me feel so peaceful.” Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan, unsurprisingly, but so are RuPaul, Alanis Morissette, and a trainer for the New York Knicks.
doTERRA prides itself on selling the top of the line quality.  Their ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation.  Some may say that this is a matter of taste, but in the essential oils industry, the first distill of ylang ylang is more valued and therefore, a higher priced oil.  To their credit, doTERRA does call their ylang ylang a complete distill on their website.

Young children and the elderly may be more sensitive to essential oils. So you may need to dilute them more. And you should totally avoid some oils, like birch and wintergreen. In even small amounts, those may cause serious problems in kids 6 or younger because they contain a chemical called methyl salicylate. Don’t use essential oils on a baby unless your pediatrician says it’s OK.
Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation, often by using steam. Other processes include expression, solvent extraction, sfumatura, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping, wax embedding, and cold pressing. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.

Baths: 10 drops mixed with 1/2 cup coconut milk and 1 cup of salt makes a fantastic aromatherapy for circulatory, muscular, respiratory, skin and sleep problems in addition to calming your nerves. Generally, it is advisable to avoid potent oils that could irritate the skin such as cinnamon, oregano or clove; instead, use soothing oils like eucalyptus, lavender, and sandalwood.
This May, a doTerra representative named Lara held an Essential Oils 101 class at a barbecue restaurant in Waco, Texas. The wood-panelled room had paintings of trains on one wall and of hunting dogs on another. Lara, a bright-eyed woman in chunky jewelry, introduced herself as “the crazy oil lady.” She was in the midst of a doTerra leadership-training program that brought her to a handful of states to lecture about oils. She told the dozen people assembled that she had become interested in oils a few years ago, when her three-year-old son started showing symptoms of autism after receiving the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. “My pediatrician had no help for me,” she said. But diffusing oils made her son as “calm as a kitten.” After a few years of treatment with oils, she said, he is on track developmentally.
Peppermint is a perennial herb that grows widely in Europe, North America, and Asia. Originating in India, Peppermint has been used for centuries for its revitalizing properties and invigorating fresh, cool, grassy-mint smell. This oil promotes energy and alertness, so enjoy the cooling effect effects on your skin for a soothing and enlightening experience with Peppermint Essential Oil.
Most common essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, tea tree oil, patchouli, and eucalyptus are distilled. Raw plant material, consisting of the flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, seeds, or peel, is put into an alembic (distillation apparatus) over water. As the water is heated, the steam passes through the plant material, vaporizing the volatile compounds. The vapors flow through a coil, where they condense back to liquid, which is then collected in the receiving vessel.
It might also: Prevent colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease. According to a small  clinical trial conducted by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, curcumin can help shrink precancerous lesions known as colon polyps, when taken with a small amount of quercetin, a powerful antioxidant found in onions, apples, and cabbage. The average number of polyps dropped more than 60% and those that remained shrank by more than 50%. In a 2006 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, researchers at UCLA also found that curcumin helps clear the brain of the plaques that are characteristic of the disease.
According to Avery, while specific dilutions can vary based on personal needs and individual essential oils, the general rule of thumb is to aim for a one to five percent dilution. "A one percent blend is six drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier, while a five percent blend would be 30 drops per ounce of carrier," she says. For specifics, check out Aura Cacia's handy dilution guide.
Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils and their volatile aromatic compounds, for psychological and physical well-being. Aromatherapy, which also goes by “essential oil therapy,” is defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences of plants to “balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.”

Published in the journal Lipids in Health and Disease, the article tells us that lavender essential oils “significantly protected against the increase of blood glucose as well as the decrease of antioxidant enzyme activities.” Ultimately, scientists discovered that lavender essential oil treatment helped induce a decrease in oxidative stress, which is known to cause heart disease and a slew of other health concerns, as well as increase antioxidant enzyme activities. The Eucalyptus tree, or Eucalyptus Globulus, is native to Australia. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of this evergreen. Eucalyptus has been used for hundred of years for a wide variety of things; from protecting teeth against cavities, to helping with asthma and other respiratory ailments, or even treating lice, this colorless essential oil is an effective treatment for a myriad of things, including the treatment of scars.
Low temperature and low pressure play an important part of collecting the highest quality essential oil. When plant matter is placed into a chamber and steam is injected, the plant’s essential oil is released into the air. The steam and essential oil are carried out of the chamber and cooled. The oil and water are then allowed to separate for collection.

Essential oils are usually lipophilic (literally: "oil-loving") compounds that usually are not miscible with water. They can be diluted in solvents like pure ethanol and polyethylene glycol. The most common way to safely dilute essential oils for topical use is in a carrier oil. This can be any vegetable oil readily available, the most popular for skin care being jojoba, coconut, wheat germ, olive and avocado.[32]

Do not take any oils internally and do not apply undiluted essential oils, absolutes, CO2s or other concentrated essences onto the skin without advanced essential oil knowledge or consultation from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils with children. It is safest to consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using oils with children. For in-depth information on oil safety issues, read Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young.

I heard from a reader that there is source map for doTERRA oils, but I couldn't find it. I did find one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. It shows that the Petitgrain Oil is sourced from Paraguay. Other companies have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing where their other oils are from to see if their claim about organic being something they can't do is reasonable or not.

When you have cuts and abrasions, not only do you have to deal with the pain but open wounds are at risk of infection. A great way to help prevent infections and encourage quick healing is with a topical application of essential oils. Essential oils offer a variety of healing properties that can ensure your cuts and abrasions are treated fast and effectively. Here’s how to use essential oils for treating wounds:
Some scars are hidden and do not attract much attention, while others are very prominent and seem to be like conversation starters whenever someone happens to notice them. Every scar tells a tale; it's up to you whether or not it will be able to tell it. If your scar takes center stage, no matter how you try to hide it, and if you are ready to take steps to reduce its appearance naturally, then read on.

Although they may not be the perfect replacement for all synthetic pesticides, essential oils have prospects for crop or indoor plant protection, urban pest control,[31] and marketed insect repellants, such as bug spray. Certain essential oils have been shown in studies to be comparable, if not exceeding, in effectiveness to DEET, which is currently marketed as the most effective mosquito repellent. Although essential oils are effective as pesticides when first applied in uses such as mosquito repellent applied to the skin, it is only effective in the vapor stage. Since this stage is relatively short-lived, creams and polymer mixtures are used in order to elongate the vapor period of effective repellency.[27]

Perhaps you took a spill off of your bike. Maybe you were running and your feet went one way and your body went the other. Maybe your hand slipped, just as you were pounding that last nail. Maybe you had a medical procedure that left a permanent and visible blemish. Maybe you had a baby. Whatever the reason, scars are not always the most welcomed guests at the dinner party.

The indigenous peoples of Australia developed herbal medicine based on plants that were readily available to them. The isolation of the indigenous people meant the remedies developed were for far less serious diseases, this was from not contracting western illnesses. Herbs such as river mint, wattle and eucalyptus were used for coughs, diarrhea, fever and headaches.[12]

Several edible vegetable and animal oils, and also fats, are used for various purposes in cooking and food preparation. In particular, many foods are fried in oil much hotter than boiling water. Oils are also used for flavoring and for modifying the texture of foods (e.g. Stir Fry). Cooking oils are derived either from animal fat, as butter, lard and other types, or plant oils from the olive, maize, sunflower and many other species.

Most flowers contain too little volatile oil to undergo expression, but their chemical components are too delicate and easily denatured by the high heat used in steam distillation. Instead, a solvent such as hexane or supercritical carbon dioxide is used to extract the oils.[10] Extracts from hexane and other hydrophobic solvents are called concretes, which are a mixture of essential oil, waxes, resins, and other lipophilic (oil-soluble) plant material.
Coconut oil contains fatty acids and micronutrients that may help to reverse skin damage. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help to prevent and heal skin conditions. Coconut oil may also increase collagen production, help the skin to retain moisture, and soften the skin. Research from 2010 found that topical application of coconut oil on wounds in rats had a positive effect on the healing process. This was due in part to its antioxidant activity and effect on collagen production. More research is needed on the topical application of coconut oil in humans.

My fiance has a wound in his foot, the heel area that has progressively gotten worse. Not only is there the deep hole into his foot that won’t heal even with antibiotics but now Moving up his leg to about midshin his leg has edema and his skin is red and dry and painful like a sunburn. The hole in his heel side feels differently than the radiating pain above it up to midshin level. To shorten it up he won’t let me tounch it at all. So I can’t try the oils if I must run them on. Would dropping some on it be a way to detour around that? And if so can too much be used? Thanks, hopefully awaiting your response. , Carrie
When the 4 p.m. slump strikes, reboot by sniffing an invigorating scent blend—or better yet, spritzing yourself with an oil-infused face mist. Take your pick of scents that can help you double down on the rest of the workday: One study shows that sniffing rosemary can increase memory by 75% while peppermint has also been associated with recall as well as sustained focus. Other research has shown that peppermint, basil, and helichrysum help with burnout and mental fatigue.

Carrot Seed oil also has high levels on vitamin A, which is known to help produce collagen, a necessary component in the regeneration of skin cells and tissue that form in and on the body. The more collagen, the better the chance of your skin's revival, because it helps to smooth out uneven skin and scars on the body and layer in new and healthy cells.

Studies have shown that essential oils effectively destroy several fungal, viral and bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori and Candida albicans infections. Because antibiotic resistance is becoming such a major threat in modern health care, using essential oils as a form of independent or combination therapy can help to fight bacterial infections in a safer and more natural way.  (4, 5)
Essential oils have a very small molecular size, which means that their healing properties are easily absorbed by the skin, but should not be ingested. The potency ensures that only a few drops are needed at a time, so a small bottle can last a few years when used sparingly. Most have a shelf life of five to 10 years with the exception of citrus oils, which lose their potency after about two years.
Carrot Seed, also known by its Latin name, Daucus carota, when distilled into essential oil, is known to be one of the most effective treatments for scars. Its healing properties are due to its highly antiseptic and antioxidant levels, as well as its high concentrations of Alpha and Beta-Pinene and Beta Carotene. In fact, it is the antioxidants which help fight those ever present and very damaging "free radicals" that threaten the body's immune system on a regular basis.
Immediately after receiving my oils, I posted my review on here and it was very negative. I spoke about how the bottles leaked and the oils smelled metallic and, in general, gave a really negative review. I have since visited my local health food store and purchased their versions of some of the oils offered here. Now is where I apologize. I didn't realize the quality oils kis had compared to others. Their eucalyptus and peppermint are the best I found so far! To be fair, the bottles do tend to leak so store them upright. And, I still cannot stand their lavender (which is the bottle that leaked on the rest and tinted my view.) All in all, these are very fine oils and I will be ordering again. Now, if they only sold bigger bottles...
Maximize the benefits: For both mood and sleep problems, author Duke recommends a supplement containing at least 0.3% hypericin (the active phytochemical) per capsule or 300 mg of the extract to be taken three times daily. Warning: St. John's wort has been shown to interact with several prescription medications, so be sure to check with your doctor before taking it.
Essential oils are well known for their cicatrisant properties. This means that they have the ability to help regenerate the skin at a cellular level, aiding in tissue regrowth. And what does this mean for you? It means that your body will be able to heal itself, slowly regrowing a new group of cells to compensate and replace the old ones that are scarred or blemished in some way.
The essential oils at the health food store are simply not the same quality as Young Living. Many have been adulterated with synthetic chemicals or contain cheap essential oils produced from crops with pesticides. Check the labels – they typically say not for “internal use” or “do not put directly on the skin”. I even challenge you to smell the difference. Peppermint, for instance, shouldn’t smell sweet or like candy. It should smell like a fresh-cut herb. When you compare Young Living’s Peppermint with another company – there’s simply no comparison.
Various citrus essential oils are widely used to stimulate lymph drainage, to rejuvenate sluggish, dull skin and as a bug repellent. Lemon oil stands out, however, as research has recently discovered that it carries useful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. (6) Lemon, along with a number of other widely used oils, is now being praised for its ability to combat food-born pathogens! (7)
+ For insomnia: Before bed, apply a couple of drops of diluted Palo Santo essential oil to the palm of your hands. Rub your hands together and close your eyes. Inhale deeply. Visualize being rooted and nourished by the earth. Experience the feeling of stability and strength. When you open your eyes, massage the soles of your feet with palo santo essential oil.
The reality for most recruits is quite different. Multilevel-marketing companies are structured in such a way that a large base of distributors generally spend more than they make, while a small number on top reap most of the benefits. It is often expensive to invest in an initial stock of products, as well as to make required minimum monthly purchases—around a hundred dollars for Young Living members who want to receive a commission check. According to a public income statement, more than ninety-four per cent of Young Living’s two million active members made less than a dollar in 2016, while less than one-tenth of one per cent—that is, about a thousand Royal Crown Diamonds—earned more than a million dollars. Everyone in the industry studiously avoids any comparison to pyramid schemes, which are illegal, but the structural similarities are hard to ignore. “You have the two legs of your pyramid,” a doTerra employee told me, as she explained the company’s compensation structure. “I mean, not a pyramid, but, you know, it has a triangular shape.”
Another sense of the term herb can refer to a much larger range of plants,[7] with culinary, therapeutic or other uses.[3] For example, some of the most commonly described herbs such as Sage, Rosemary and Lavender would be excluded from the botanical definition of a herb as they do not die down each year, and they possess woody stems.[5] In the wider sense, herbs may be herbaceous perennials but also trees,[7] subshrubs,[7] shrubs,[7] annuals,[7] lianas,[7] ferns,[7] mosses,[7] algae,[7] lichens,[5] and fungi.[5] Herbalism can utilize not just stems and leaves but also fruit, roots, bark and gums.[5] Therefore one suggested definition of a herb is a plant which is of use to humans,[5] although this definition is problematic since it could cover a great many plants that are not commonly described as herbs.
There are many essential oils that can be applied topically or used aromatically to reduce body aches and pains. One study that displays this essential oil benefit evaluated the efficacy of essential oils on neck pain. For the study, the experimental group received a cream that was composed of marjoram, black pepper, lavender and peppermint essential oils, and the control group used an unscented cream. The creams were applied for 4 weeks, directly to the painful area after bathing. Researchers found that the experimental group had improved pain tolerance in the neck and showed significant improvement in the 10 motion areas that were measured. (15)

Vetiver essential oil has tons of therapeutic properties! This root oil can helps support a relaxed mental state, and is great to use before bed to ease a racing mind. This popular supplement is often taken for depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. But it can cause side effects like headache, nausea, dizziness, and dry mouth. And it may make you more likely to get sunburned. It also can cause problems if you take certain drugs -- from heart medicines to antidepressants, and even birth control pills. And it can make some chemotherapy less effective.

There are many popular, quality essential oils, including those that are Certified USDA Organic, therapeutic grade and 100% pure—with no fillers, bases or additives. For example, being Certified USDA Organic is important for some people because the organic certification can be traced back clear to the seed and plant. Every handler of the product must be certified as well. Additionally, no prohibited pesticides or other toxins are used for Certified USDA Organic products.

You’d be surprised by the numerous benefits you can get from cilantro. First, it lowers blood sugar levels, fights against colon cancer, prevents neurological inflammation, promotes a healthy heart, protects against food poisoning, and supports healthy menstruation. Also, it prevents urinary tract infections, detoxifies the body of heavy metals, protects against oxidative stress, and improves sleep. And finally, it lowers anxiety, settles digestive issues, and soothes skin irritations.
Frankincense was brought to Europe by the Crusaders. The franc in its name refers to the quality, not the French. Commonly known as frankincense to westerners, the resin is known as olibanum, in Arabic al-lubān, meaning “that which results from milking” or “the product resulting from milking the boswellia tree.” It’s spiritual properties make it another one of the best spiritual essential oils.
Aromatherapy, treating skin conditions, soothing muscle inflammation… the benefits of essential oils abound. "Essential oils can be used in personal care products, in home cleaning products, for general well-being in the context of emotional support, and many other ways," says Avery. This versatility also extends to the scents themselves. "Some of the most popular essential oils, like lavender and sweet orange, cross over into many categories and can be used effectively for many applications," she says.
Do you feel energy-depleted and irritable, unable to sleep, stay focused, or lose weight? You may have attributed these symptoms to the natural hormonal fluctuations that occur with age. But behind the scenes, there are a host of pesky culprits wreaking havoc on your hormonal health: chronic stress, air pollution, chemical-laden foods and cleaning supplies, and the synthetic estrogens in personal care products. Women of all ages are left vulnerable to the consequences, suffering from unnecessary hormonal imbalance and frustrating symptoms that are often dismissed by their doctors.
Emperor Charlemagne (742-814) compiled a list of 74 different herbs that were to be planted in his gardens. The connection between herbs and health is important already in the European Middle Ages--The Forme of Cury (that is, "cookery") promotes extensive use of herbs, including in salads, and claims in its preface "the assent and advisement of the masters of physic and philosophy in the King's Court".[2]
In a series of clinical and laboratory studies over the last two decades, frankincense and myrrh have shown promise in addressing a number of common disorders. Frankincense has been investigated as a possible treatment for some cancers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, anxiety, and asthma, among other conditions. If these ancient remedies can indeed provide relief for the many patients who suffer from these potentially devastating illnesses, the great incense roads of antiquity may flourish once again with the help of these strengthening and spiritual essential oils.

We note that some of your Young Living Essential Oil products are marketed as dietary supplements, but are offered for topical use and/or intended for inhalation. Under section 201(ff)(2)(A)(i) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(ff)](2)(A)(i)], a dietary supplement is defined, among other things, as a product intended for ingestion. Topical products and other products that are not intended for ingestion are not dietary supplements.  In any case, the claims referenced above in this letter are drug claims, which are not suitable claims for dietary supplements.  As such, whether or not they are intended for ingestion, the above-mentioned products are drugs under section 201(g)(1)(B) of the Act and not dietary supplements under section 201(ff) of the Act.
Milk thistle has been used for over a thousand years in traditional medicine. It supports kidney, gallbladder, and liver health. It also contains potential anti-cancer properties. Milk thistle also promotes heart health, regulates blood sugar levels, and boosts brain health. In addition, it improves skin conditions, reduces skin damage caused by radiation treatment, prevents free radical damage, reduces visible signs of aging, and maintains healthy eyes.

Crude oil, or petroleum, and its refined components, collectively termed petrochemicals, are crucial resources in the modern economy. Crude oil originates from ancient fossilized organic materials, such as zooplankton and algae, which geochemical processes convert into oil.[8] The name "mineral oil" is a misnomer, in that minerals are not the source of the oil—ancient plants and animals are. Mineral oil is organic. However, it is classified as "mineral oil" instead of as "organic oil" because its organic origin is remote (and was unknown at the time of its discovery), and because it is obtained in the vicinity of rocks, underground traps, and sands. Mineral oil also refers to several specific distillates of crude oil.
The Copaiba Oleoresin oil is diluted, with no added ingredients, and extracted straight from the Balsam of the Copaiba tree. This pure oil does little damage to the tree, yet has more beneficial properties than the distilled oil. Copaiba Oleoresin oil promotes everyday relaxation and comfort from muscle and joint use or overexertion. This oil is also a great addition to any respiratory mixtures or used to help calm digestion. Copaiba Oleoresin offers a woody, serene, and sweet aroma that will be the perfect for everyday use.

A few weeks later, federal agents appeared at doTerra’s Utah headquarters, and began examining the company’s files. “It’s always fun when the F.D.A. shows up on your doorstep,” Hill said. “And they walk into your office and say things like ‘Dr. Hill, you are personally culpable for every single person using these oils.’ These were scary moments.” DoTerra instituted a fifty-person compliance team to scour social-media posts, looking for noncompliant language, and hosted weekly conference calls, helping distributors translate their stories into acceptable language. “We have a whole team using very sophisticated software, whose whole job is to systematically go through and look for potential claims, like ‘frankincense and cancer,’ or ‘doTerra lavender Ambien,’ ” Kirk Jowers, the doTerra vice-president, told me. “Anything suspect that goes up, we try to get it down within twenty-four hours, and we’re very effective.”

A pilot study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that the use of aromatherapy as a complementary therapy helped to reduce anxiety and depression scales in postpartum women. Women between zero and 18 months postpartum were divided into either a treatment group that inhaled a blend of rose and lavender essential oils or a control group that didn’t receive any type of aromatherapy. After four weeks, the women using aromatherapy had significant improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms compared to those in the control group. (12)

Your arsenal of home remedies is about to get a lot spicier with these best healing herbs. Though herbs have been used for hundreds of years to heal, scientists are finally starting to substantiate these plants' abilities to alleviate arthritis pain, reduce high blood sugar and cholesterol, and help with many other conditions. They're even discovering amazing new powers in the best healing herbs, such as the ability to kill cancer cells and help problem drinkers curb their alcohol intake.

During this era, it is believed that Monks continued the healing tradition of using the best essential oils and secretly kept herbal medicine alive in the halls of their monasteries. Unfortunately, folk medicine was viewed as “witchcraft,” and many herbalists were either burned at the stake or persecuted. Thankfully, the Renaissance resurrected herbal medicine, and physicians such as Paracelsus challenged his medical colleagues with testimonials of successful treating life-threatening concerns like leprosy.

doTERRA prides itself on selling the top of the line quality.
This information has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.  When working with essential oils, never use them undiluted, in eyes or mucus membranes. Do not take internally unless working with a qualified and expert practitioner.  If applying an essential oil to your skin always perform a small patch test to an insensitive part of the body (after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier). Further dilution is required when working with children and pets. If you are being treated for any medical condition, are pregnant or nursing, consult your certified health care professional before using any essential oil product.  Keep away from children.
Essential oils have become a huge part of the herbal products business. One recent estimate put the global market in these products at $7.5 billion in 2015. Another report postulates that the global market could hit $14 billion by 2024.  Young Living was recently listed at No. 22 in the annual Global 100 list assembled by the publication Direct Selling News of the world’s largest network marketing companies. DSN pegged Young Living’s 2016 annual revenue at $1 billion. It’s the largest MLM on the list that focuses on essential oils. Young Living sells products based on essential oils that include diffusible oils, topical personal care products and cosmetics, as well as a line of dietary supplements, some of which include the ingredients.
There is a wonderful story shared by internationally certified aroma therapist Cristina Proano-Carrion on her blog about this sacred and spiritual essential oil. According to legend, long before the world was born, a young lad named Crosokait was one of the very few humans alive. He fell in love with a young maiden but the love was unrequited. He fell ill with the sadness of rejection and although he called for her many times on his deathbed, she did not come. He uttered these dying words:
Munchy Stop encourages healthy eating patterns by helping to manage cravings and unnecessary snacking between meals. This essential oil blend can be combined with proper exercise and a nutritious lifestyle to promote weight management. The intense citrus aroma, created by Plant Therapy's Certified Aromatherapists, works to help improve willpower and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Certain essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy, but care must be taken when selecting quality and brand.[51] Some essential oils may contain impurities and additives that may be harmful to pregnant women. Sensitivity to certain smells may cause pregnant women to have adverse side effects with essential oil use, such as headache, vertigo, and nausea. Pregnant women often report an abnormal sensitivity to smells and taste,[52] and essential oils can cause irritation and nausea when ingested. Always consult a doctor before use.

Almond oil has numerous benefits to the skin and may help to reduce the appearance of scars. Almond oil contains vitamin E, which helps hydrate, soothe, and moisturize dry or damaged skin. There’s some evidence that almond oil can rejuvenate the skin, improve complexion, and even out skin tone. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help skin to heal. More research is needed to understand its potential in healing scars.

How to use black seed oil: For healthy hair, mix a little black seed oil with your shampoo or apply directly to your hair as a conditioner. For beautiful skin, apply black seed oil to wet skin. Cover with a warm moist cloth and leave for about 20 minutes. Wash this off. Repeat this a couple of times a week to help reduce wrinkles, fine lines, or just to keep your skin soft and supple.

First and foremost, it soothes stress and anxiety. It balances your mood. Lavender also cures sleep issues. This includes apnea, restless sleep patterns, and insomnia. It eases aching muscles, reduces inflammation, quickly heals wounds, prevents development of infections on wound sites, reduces the chance of heart diseases, and relieves bloating and other digestive issues.

It is also important to recognize that, in order for these oils to be effective, they must be used on a daily basis for a number of months. Essential oil treatments take time to work, so it is vital to create a daily routine of application. When applied daily, you should begin to see some changes in your skin's appearance in about a month, although all bodies are different.
Because essential oils are obviously all-natural, it might be easy to assume that they're gentle and largely unreactive. This isn't the case at all—by definition, it's extremely potent stuff. "On average, they are up to 75 times more powerful than dried herbs," says Avery. As such, "essential oils must be handled with care." This means that a couple drops go a long way, and aside from very specific oils (more on that later), essential oils should always be diluted properly before applying them directly to skin. Whether or not essential oils should be ingested is actually a highly debated topic, and many argue that it isn't safe unless specifically advised by a doctor or expert.

This refreshing and stimulating essential oil has many different benefits, including promoting memory retention and alertness. Include Rosemary 1,8-Cineole in your skin care routine and shampoo to support healthy hair growth and skin. Diffuse this oil to aid in respiratory troubles. Rosemary 1,8-Cineole can be included in massages to increase circulation and help relax muscles.
Diffusion is the process of dispersing essential oils so that their aroma fills a room or an area with the essential oil fragrance. Therefore, a diffuser is a device that diffuses the essential oil into the air. There are several types of diffusers available on the market in 2018, and many have reviews that may help you decide which one may be right for you, if you are interested in getting a diffuser.

Lavender is the most well known of the essential oils, and for good reason. It has antiviral and antibacterial properties, which can reduce the healing time for scrapes, bites and stings. It doesn’t require a carrier oil, and can be put directly onto the affected area. Lavender has also been shown to promote relaxation and sleep. Try adding a few drops to the bath, or on your pillow to help you unwind and fall asleep.

There are a number of different carrier oils that work well. For scar and blemish reduction and removal,  we recommend Emu oil,  Coconut oil, Rosehip oil, or Tamanu oil, because these oils have specific skin regenerative properties which other oils do not. When used in connection with certain essential oils, these carrier oils can work their magic on your body, leaving your skin looking clean, healthy, and scar free.

Some herbs can be infused in boiling water to make herbal teas (also termed tisanes).[3][7] Typically the dried leaves, flowers or seeds are used, or fresh herbs are used.[3] Herbal teas tend to made from aromatic herbs,[8] may not contain tannins or caffeine,[3] and are not typically mixed with milk.[7] Common examples include chamomile tea,[7] or Mint tea.[8]
In between sessions, Laura Warford, a stay-at-home mom with a drawl and a shimmer of silver eyeshadow, told me that she had become involved in oils after her daughter, Emmy Grace, died from a heart defect when she was three days old. Warford came home from the hospital, her breasts still leaking milk, and tried to manage her grief while also taking care of her toddler son. Nights were the worst—she had a hard time falling asleep, and when she did she would wake up again minutes later with her mind racing. A friend recommended diffusing lavender oil. The effect was immediate: she felt calmer and was able to sleep through the night. Soon Warford began selling oils. She found a community of supportive friends through Young Living Facebook groups and shared her story with them. She got up every day by reminding herself that she was helping other people. “You can lose yourself outside of being Mommy,” she said. “I can be creative now. I can use my gifts that I didn’t even know I had before this. I can have adult conversations with people. I went from making zero dollars a month to over zero dollars a month. I got to come here because of Young Living’s paycheck. I bought my plane ticket and my convention pass with my money. That’s empowering. That feels good.”
Cohen is middle-aged, with a friendly, open face framed by graying curls. Though her house, in Long Beach, is full of New Age trappings—a statue of Ganesh, huge hunks of crystal—she speaks with the quick clip of someone who once gave a lot of corporate presentations. As we sat at her kitchen table, a glass globe puffed out clouds of tangerine-scented vapor.

After asking the patients to record their headache severity and associated symptoms every 30 minutes for a total of 2 hours, researchers found that the difference between the controls and treated patients was statistically significant. From 129 headache attacks in the treatment group, 92 responded entirely or partially to lavender. In the control group, 32 out of 68 headache attacks responded to the placebo. (19)
Herbs can be perennials such as thyme, sage or lavender, biennials such as parsley, or annuals like basil. Perennial herbs can be shrubs such as rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis, or trees such as bay laurel, Laurus nobilis – this contrasts with botanical herbs, which by definition cannot be woody plants. Some plants are used as both herbs and spices, such as dill weed and dill seed or coriander leaves and seeds. There are also some herbs, such as those in the mint family, that are used for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

Representatives of both doTerra and Young Living like to highlight the medical benefits of their products. “There are literally thousands of studies on the benefits of essential oils,” Hill said. In fact, there have been very few large-scale, peer-reviewed studies of essential oils’ use on humans, and their conclusions have been relatively modest. It appears that lavender may improve sleep quality and duration, and that peppermint may reduce symptoms of headache and irritable-bowel syndrome. Many more studies have looked at oils’ impact on cell cultures in a lab, sometimes with encouraging results. Some oils have been shown to have antimicrobial effects, and to work synergistically with antibiotics. But the conclusions reached by scientists are beside the point for many consumers. “I’ll use my wife as an example,” Hill said. “She’s not going to be able to tell you the first thing about chemistry. Put a research paper in front of her—zero interest. And that’s probably how most people are. What’s real to them is the experience they’re having.”
Twenty years ago, Carla Cohen fell mysteriously ill. She couldn’t put her finger on what was wrong; it felt as though some conspiracy between her mind and her body were eroding her capacity to work. Cohen, who was an entertainment executive in Los Angeles, woke up every morning feeling weak and foggy-brained, with a low-grade fever. Her doctors couldn’t make a diagnosis, and suggested antidepressants. “I said, ‘I’m not depressed!’ They just told me to go home and rest.”
Jamaican black caster oil might as well be magic, because this stuff works wonders. Why? Well, because its 100 percent pure blend uses traditional Jamaican methods to roast and boil organic castor beans. These beans are then blended to create a silky lather, which has been proven to promote length, luster, and strong hair follicles. Oh, and you can use it to make your nails and lashes grow, too.

Moreover, “Thieves,” “Cinnamon Bark,” “Oregano,” “ImmuPower,” “Rosemary,” “Myrtle,” “Sandalwood,” “Eucalyptus Blue,” “Peppermint,” “Ylang Ylang,” “Frankincense,” and “Orange” are also “new drugs” under section 201(p) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(p)], because they are not generally recognized as safe and effective for use under the conditions prescribed, recommended, or suggested in the labeling.  Under sections 301(d) and 505(a) of the Act [21 U.S.C. §§ 331(d) and 355(a)], a new drug may not be introduced or delivered for introduction into interstate commerce unless an FDA-approved application is in effect for the drug.  FDA approves a new drug on the basis of scientific data and information demonstrating that the drug is safe and effective.

Frankincense essential oil has been found useful for certain health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, stomach ulcers, asthma, breaking up phlegm, and helping digestive disorders by stimulating gastric juices and bile production. The antiseptic qualities of this medicinal and spiritual essential oil can help prevent bad breath, cavities, toothaches, mouth sores, and other infections.

After meeting a French lavender distiller and grower at a Whole Life expo in California, Young became fascinated by the medicinal properties of essential oils. In the early nineties, he travelled to France to study distillation methods. He bought a hundred and sixty acres of farmland in Idaho and planted peppermint, tansy, and lavender. In 1994, he married his third wife, Mary, a trained opera singer and a driven businesswoman. The couple renovated a run-down building in Riverton, Utah, to use as the headquarters of Young Living Essential Oils; Young mixed his Abundance oil blend into the paint he used on the walls.

3. Kudzu: Curb problem drinking A group of moderately heavy drinkers in their 20s voluntarily cut their beer consumption in half after taking capsules containing the Chinese herb (also called Pueraria lobata) for a week, according to a study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. Researchers say the kudzu more quickly allows alcohol to get to the part of the brain that tells you that you've had enough.

Wondering how those great smelling essential oils are made? Turns out, essential oils aren’t “made” at all. They ARE “extracted” from plants, herbs and spices. But just because they are extracted from plants doesn’t mean the way they’re sourced is all the same. In fact, the way they’re extracted from the plant or herb can have a big impact on the quality. Here’s a quick rundown of the two primary ways essential oils are extracted from the plants.
According to a review published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “at least 90 essential oils can be identified as being recommended for dermatological use, with at least 1,500 combinations.” What gives essential oils their skin benefits is their ability to fight against pathogens that are responsible for dermatological infections. Essential oils can also help to improve inflammatory skin conditions, like dermatitis, eczema and lupus, improve the general appearance of your skin and even aid wound healing. (16)
The phytochemical make-up of an oil can vary from plant to plant, even on the same farm. Growing conditions, harvesting methods, and even the time of day that the plant is harvested can have an effect on the phytochemical content of an oil. For instance, ylang ylang flowers are best collected between midnight and 9:00 am in the morning. That is when the essential oil content in the flowers is at its highest and best.

#10. Oral Ingestion – Unless you are working under the guidance of a certified health practitioner, it is not suggested that you take an essential oil internally. It is not that taking oils internally is necessarily a bad or dangerous thing, but you do need some guidance as to which oils are safe to take internally, how much to use, and how frequently.

Oils’ rising popularity is part of the contemporary appetite for wellness, an embrace of holistic healthy-living practices ranging from the low key (meditation) to the wacky (Brain Dust, a forty-dollar jar of adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms that promises to “align you with the cosmic flow for great achievement”). Wellness is often dismissed as frivolity, another way for wealthy white women to spend money and obsess about their bodies. But you’re just as likely to find essential oils in a small-town drugstore in the Midwest as in an organic market in L.A., and their appeal is often less about indulgence than about anxiety. “I am concerned about antibiotic resistance, emerging viruses, and the risks posed by chronic disease,” the herbalist Cat Ellis writes in her book “Prepper’s Natural Medicine: Life-Saving Herbs, Essential Oils and Natural Remedies for When There Is No Doctor.” For many consumers, essential oils represent a purer and more ancient form of medicine, one with Biblical overtones—all those scriptural references to anointing—and none of the baggage of the contemporary health-care system. (Wellness-focussed Web sites are more likely to cite oils’ centuries of use in Ayurvedic medicine.) Like homeschooling, beekeeping, and canning, the use of essential oils crosses the political spectrum and speaks to a common desire for increased self-sufficiency—or, more darkly, a fear of imminent institutional collapse. Many of the products available from Goop, Paltrow’s posh wellness emporium, are also for sale on Infowars, Alex Jones’s alt-right conspiracy-theory Web site.

Many A good number (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms are located in the U.S.  I think that's fine for a company being more “in control” of their product, but not great if you follow conventional wisdom that plants grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) when they are grown in their indigenous locations (where they are supposed to grow naturally).

Originated from Spain and distilled from the leaves of the Cypress tree, this oil has many therapeutic benefits and a crisp, clean scent with a hint of wood and spice. Cypress is popular choice to help promote respiratory health throughout the year, especially during seasons where airborne illnesses are more prevalent. The calming scent of this oil bring comfort and strength during times of loss or sadness. Cypress can also help with effects of aging and calm the appearance of "spider" veins. Finally, add this oil to any recipes to help extinguish unwanted odors.
Recent studies have indicated that the worldwide frankincense tree populations are declining partly due to over-exploitation. Frequently tapped trees produce seeds that germinate at a rate of 16% while seeds of trees that had not been tapped germinate at a rate of more than 80%. In addition, burning, grazing and attacks by the longhorn beetle have reduced the tree population to an unsafe level of potential extinction. Only responsible farmers who are conscientious about preservation and use sustainable methods for growing and harvesting will keep this sacred tree and it’s spiritual essential oil alive for generations to come. As a general rule when using natural products, we should patronize those growers and manufacturers who practice sustainability.

This herbal healing oil contains a wonderful essential oil blend that cools, soothes, and heals minor to moderate injuries. You can put a dab on your throat, temples, between your brows, and on each cheekbone to help open congested sinuses and relieve pain. I have also used it this way for easing bronchitis and cough with great success. It’s definitely a staple for use during times of cold and flu.
Essential oils are responsible for the fragrances you smell. They’re also the nutritional compounds inside many plants and herbs. And once extracted from the plant or herb, they bring many of the same health-giving benefits to the table. One reason they’re so powerful is because they’re the “essence” of the real plant or herb, only in a highly concentrated form. In fact, one small, 15mL bottle of lemon essential oil can contain up to 45 lemons!

Before administering any at home treatment, make sure the wound isn’t so severe that you need stitches or other professional medical help. If you do not require a doctor, you can use a natural home remedy of essential oils to heal cuts and abrasions. Start by cleaning the wounds area with water and a mild soap. You can also apply a little hydrogen peroxide to help remove all the dirt and foreign particles. Then gently dry with a clean towel. Depending on the type of oil you select add 1-2 to drops of the essential oil directly to the wound or add 1-2 drops into a healing carrier base like aloe vera or coconut oil. If possible massage the essential oils into the area gently with a clean towel. Then wrap with a bandage. Make sure to change out the bandage two times a day and reapply the essential oils until fully healed.
An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile (easily evaporated at normal temperatures) aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An essential oil is "essential" in the sense that it contains the "essence of" the plant's fragrance—the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived.[1] The term essential used here does not mean indispensable as with the terms essential amino acid or essential fatty acid which are so called since they are nutritionally required by a given living organism.[2] In contrast to fatty oils, essential oils typically evaporate completely without leaving a stain or residue.

Tea Tree essential oil is, essentially, a cure-all for many topical infections, abrasions, and skin conditions. Due to its cicatrisant properties, it is well known to help heals wounds very rapidly and also diminish scars, due to its healing and regenerative powers. It also acts as a blood stimulant, aiding in overall blood circulation and delivery.

It's anti-inflammatory, which is great for reducing the redness and irritation that can lead to breakouts. It helps your skin renew itself by getting rid of dead skin cells. Immortelle is also an antiseptic and antibiotic which means it can fight the bacteria that leads to acne. It's also an antioxidant which prevents aging.
In 2000, Michael Pratt, a professor of management at Boston College, conducted an ethnographic study of Amway distributors. He concluded that the company offered few of the benefits that traditionally inspired loyalty. Its workforce was geographically diffuse; workers had inconsistent income, no benefits, and little job security. What held Amway together was its ability to foster strong feelings of identification, and to get its members to see the company as the embodiment of an idealized life. Young Living’s affection for abstract nouns—purity, abundance, wellness, vitality—helps to define a shared culture that prizes freedom, family, and self-sufficiency, and is suspicious of regulation and Big Pharma. All the ancillary swag for sale at the conference—the T-shirts and bumper stickers and magnets—helped to transmit the message that Young Living’s distributors were not just people who sold oils; they were oil people.

Palo santo is used in South America in much the same way as white ceremonial sage is used in North America: to combat negative energy and to cleanse a space. Amazonian shamans use it in sacred plant spirit ceremonies; the rising smoke of the lit sticks is believed to enter the energy field of ritual participants to clear misfortune, negative thoughts, and chase away evil spirits.
In between sessions, Laura Warford, a stay-at-home mom with a drawl and a shimmer of silver eyeshadow, told me that she had become involved in oils after her daughter, Emmy Grace, died from a heart defect when she was three days old. Loosely translated, palo santo means “holy wood” or “sacred wood.” Palo santo has been used for hundreds of years by indigenous tribe’s shamans for spiritual applications as one of the most spiritual essential oils. The aroma of Palo Santo is uniquely sweet and woody. It was used by the Incas to purify and cleanse the spirit from negative energies.
#5. Steam Bowl Inhalation – Drip your chosen essential oil into a bowl of steaming water (please use filtered so that no chlorine is also inhaled). Place a towel over your head and over the bowl of water and breathe in deeply (be careful if the water was boiled, the steam can be hot enough to burn). Please keep your eyes closed when using this method or use swimming goggles to protect your eyes. The steam quickly vaporizes the oil and it is rapidly absorbed into the throat, sinuses, and then bloodstream. This method is a very direct and potent method. Do not use any more than 1-2 drops of essential oil, or you may find it overwhelming. Please note that heating oils can diminish the therapeutic value of the oil so do not use this method exclusively if you are fighting cancer.

Companies in the fragrance and food industries regularly supplement naturally derived oils with synthetic molecules, yielding cheaper products and greater consistency. “An oil that is synthetic in its chemistry won’t work the same way,” David Hill, an avuncular chiropractor who was formerly the director of Gary Young’s Utah clinic and is now doTerra’s chief medical officer, told me. Last year, a former Young Living distributor named Miles Jordens crowdsourced the funds to have several companies’ oils analyzed by an independent lab. He found that two of Young Living’s oils contained synthetic adulterants. “When you start to see the amount of plant material required to produce oils, and when you have millions of people ordering—I just question how the demand can be met without possibly cutting corners,” Jordens told me. A Young Living spokesperson said that the company tested its oils in independent labs and found no evidence of adulteration.

Its vigorous nature means it can sometimes be invasive, so to avoid it taking over, grow it in a bottomless bucket set in the soil. With its refreshing and pleasant spearmint flavour, the herb is often used to flavour salads and sauces, such as mint sauce. Its leaves can also be dried or used fresh to create herbal tea, and are often used in domestic herbal remedies.
First and foremost, the grading systems companies use to grade their products are all relative because there is no regulation of the grades. So when it says "therapeutic grade", that just means it's that companies idea of therapeutic grade. That's not to say they are misrepresenting their products, but there will be variance between products because there is no standard, so finding a brand you trust is important.
My husband and I have used several over the counter products. Some of those products help our sore muscles while other do not. Most of the store bought products smell really strong and stain my bedding. The deep muscle relief essential oil mixed with your favorite carrier oil really works the sore muscles, relieving the pain. Most importantly for me is the pleasant smell, I really like it (Wintergreen). I definitely will purchase again but will get the bigger bottle. FYI, I was not given anything for free, this review was given after deciding to try this product on my own.

Florasol is another solvent used to obtain essential oils. It was originally developed as a refrigerant to replace Freon. Although Florasol is an "ozone-friendly" product, it has a high global warming potential (GWP; 100-yr GWP = 1430).[11] The European Union has banned its use, with a phase-out process that began in 2011, to be completed in 2017.[12] One advantage of Florasol is that the extraction of essential oils occurs at or below room temperature so degradation through high temperature extremes does not occur. The essential oils are mostly pure and contain little to no foreign substances.[citation needed]
Both Young Living and doTerra follow a multilevel-marketing model. Distributors often buy products at wholesale prices and sell them at a retail markup, but the real money comes from recruiting other distributors into your “downline,” and getting a commission on their sales. Young Living divides its sales force into a complex hierarchy stratified partly by sales volume, ranging from Distributor (the lowest level, comprising ninety-four per cent of members) to Royal Crown Diamond (less than one-tenth of one per cent).

Young purchased a second farm in Mona, Utah, in 1996, and opened his first offshore farm in Ecuador in 2006.[10] In 2010 they became the "first large commercial distillery" to distill essential oils from frankincense, and in 2014 their Highland Flats distillery "became the first automated, large-capacity, computerized steam distilling facility ... for essential oils".[10] Sales also increased: in 1996 the company projected sales between $8 and $10 million,[15] and by 2015 it had passed $1 billion in annual sales,[11] which it continued to exceed in 2016 and 2017.[14]

Greetings! I'm Wendy Robbins, the founder, curator and writer for AromaWeb. I've been working with essential oils for nearly 25 years, have completed over 400 documented hours of education in the field of aromatherapy, am a Certified Aromatherapist and am a Professional Level Member of both the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy. Spikenard, and it’s spiritual essential oil, have been utilized since ancient times as a medicine for curing heart diseases, intellectual disabilities, urine-related problems, insomnia etc. Famed Ayurvedic healer charaka and “father of surgery” Sushruta incorporated spikenard in many medicinal essential oils, prescribed for edema, hemorrhoids, arthritis, gout, fractures, and obstinate skin diseases, mostly for external application.
A 2014 systematic review conducted at the University of Minnesota evaluated 15 quantitative studies, including 11 randomized controlled trials that examined the effects of essential oils on sleep. Researchers found that a majority of the study findings suggest a positive effect of essential oils on sleep deprivation and disturbances. Lavender oil was the most frequently studied oil and of all evaluated studies, no adverse events were reported. (20)

Choosing the best essential oil will depend on the health concern or condition that you are trying to remedy. Each essential oil is made up of different compounds and possess different properties, so while some oils are great for relaxing your mind, easing muscle tension and promoting restful sleep, other oils are stimulating, energy boosting and support cognitive function. To find out what essential oil is best for you, do some research on your specific health concern.
For each profiled oil, you will find information on its botanical name, common method of extraction, oil color, oil consistency, perfumery note, strength of the initial aroma, aromatic description, uses, constituents, and safety information. For most information provided, the data is based on the review of particular samples and could differ from your personal experience. As the uses, constituents and safety information data are subjects requiring research, specific references are provided.
It is interesting to learn that the very thing that gives an essential oil its characteristic smell is also what provides that oil with its healing ability. There can be hundreds of phytochemicals (plant based chemicals) within each drop of essential oil. Science is just beginning to learn exactly how each phytochemical works in the human body. Having said that, there is still much we do not know!

Don't stress: Relaxation is only a whiff away. While there are plenty of science-backed scents for finding calm (rose, sandalwood, lavender, frankincense, and orange among them), Avery points out that in the end, you do you: "Any aroma that speaks to you and brings about a sense of calm and relaxation can be beneficial." Our favorite trick for alleviating tension in 30 seconds flat? Massage an oil blend with calming scents into your temples, which are pressure points.

I did many hours of research to find an essential oil company that I felt I could trust with my family’s health. Young Living is that company. They have been around for more than 20 years and the only essential oil company that owns farms all over the world (including France, Oman, Ecuador, and here in the U.S.) and oil distilleries. In fact, Gary Young, the founder of Young Living, built the first essential oil distillery in the U.S.
Frankincense aids in cell health and regrowth, especially in terms of skin cells. Not only does it reduce the appearance of scars, it also helps to speed up the healing process, helping new cuts and other abrasions disappear. Frankincense is also known to improve skin tone and balance sebum levels, which will allow your skin to grow new skin over the older, scarred skin.
Tea Tree Organic essential oil is popular around the world because of its wide range of uses. This oil is known to have a significant impact on calming agitated, red skin. Tea Tree oil can also be used to help clear skin blemishes and calm sun exposed skin. The natural, cooling, and woody aroma of this oil act as a great aid to reviving musty and stale rooms. Add it to your cleaning sprays and products or diffuse it to get rid of unwanted odors and promote a healthy immune system.

Cumin oil, which is safe to use in your food, can cause blisters if you put it on your skin.  Citrus oils that are safe in your food may be bad for your skin, especially if you go out into the sun. And the opposite is true, too. Eucalyptus or sage oil may soothe you if you rub it on your skin or breathe it in. But swallowing them could can cause a serious complication, like a seizure.

Vetiver essential oil has tons of therapeutic properties! This root oil can helps support a relaxed mental state, and is great to use before bed to ease a racing mind. The rustic, earthy, and woody aroma of this oil can be added to perfumes for a natural and pleasant smell. In general use, herbs are plants with savory or aromatic properties that are used for flavoring and garnishing food, medicinal purposes, or for fragrances; excluding vegetables and other plants consumed for macronutrients. Culinary use typically distinguishes herbs from spices. Herbs generally refers to the leafy green or flowering parts of a plant (either fresh or dried), while spices are usually dried and produced from other parts of the plant, including seeds, bark, roots and fruits.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine in which healing effects are ascribed to the aromatic compounds in essential oils and other plant extracts. Aromatherapy may be useful to induce relaxation, but there is not sufficient evidence that essential oils can effectively treat any condition.[23] Essential oils should not be interpreted to be cures for chronic disease, or other illnesses, as scientific research does not support this.[24] Much of the research on the use of essential oils for health purposes has serious methodological errors. In a systemic review of 201 published studies on essential oils as alternative medicines, only 10 were found to be of acceptable methodological quality, and even these 10 were still weak in reference to scientific standards.[25] Use of essential oils may cause harm including allergic reactions and skin irritation; there has been at least one case of death.[26] As such, the use of essential oils as an alternative medicine should be approached with caution.

Ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus divided the plant world into trees, shrubs and herbs.[8] Herbs came to be considered in 3 groups, namely pot herbs (e.g. onions), sweet herbs (e.g. thyme) and salad herbs (e.g. wild celery).[5] During the seventeenth century as selective breeding changed the plants size and flavor away from the wild plant, pot herbs began to be referred to as vegetables as they were no longer considered only suitable for the pot.[5]

What we know as modern “aromatherapy” was not introduced formally until French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse first coined the phrase in 1937. Although he wasn't necessarily a natural health advocate, he became interested in essential oils after a 1910 accident where he badly burned his hand, and used the first available salve in his laboratory: a pure, undiluted lavender oil compound that not only immediately eased the pain, but healed his injury without infection or scar.

Several company employees and contractors harvested, transported, and distilled rosewood (Aniba roseaodora or Brazilian rosewood) in Peru and imported some of the resulting oil into the United States, through Ecuador. As Young Living grew, former employees told me, reining in Young’s spending became an issue. At the company’s showcase farm, in Mona, Utah, Young built replicas of a Wild West town and a medieval castle. As “Sir Gary,” he hosted tournaments, in which he donned a suit of armor and competed in jousting events. He had plans drawn up for a two-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar theme park, Mount Youngmore, which would feature jousting, a five-star hotel, and a mountain with Young’s face etched on it. (Young has denied this.) “It was just crazy what they were trying to build out there,” David Stirling, then Young Living’s chief operating officer, told me. Stirling said he was also alarmed by a video he saw of Young, whose only medical degree is a doctorate in naturopathy from an unaccredited school, performing gallbladder surgery and giving essential oils intravenously at the clinic in Ecuador. Stirling attempted to shift Young Living’s focus away from Young to the oils, but he met with resistance from Young—and also from many distributors, who felt a deep loyalty to Gary and Mary.

I’ve read MANY pages on many websites when it comes to information on essential oils, and yours is honestly one of the best when it comes to the descriptions, uses and health benefits, and it’s very organized as well. You’ve done an excellent job on this page, as well as the entire website, so thank you for the wealth of information on everything you’ve shared!
Betty, You are correct about the difference between Pyramids and MLM’s. Do your homework Emma. Visit the farms. You will see that Young Living owns it’s own farms and doesn’t rely on a third party to supply their oils. There is a lot of time, money and research that goes into these oils. If nothing else, go to the Young Living website, scroll down and read D. Gary Young’s blog on how he got started. He didn’t copy other people’s hard work…he DID the hard work.

Palo santo’s properties as a spiritual essential oil and substance are also known to have been valued medicinally, by inhaling its smoke along with burning yerba mate leaves and even feathers of the rhea bird (a flightless bird similar to an ostrich) for its healing effects. Some protected palo santo comes from sustainably cultivated wood grown on a fifty-acre farm in Ecuador that contains both naturally occurring and replanted palo santo. To date they have replanted more than five thousand palo santo trees on the land to ensure an adequate supply of this for the future.
Tea Tree essential oil is a strong and effective antioxidant, able to improve the overall appearance of the skin, as well as reduce blemishes, lines, and scars. By helping to regrow new and healthy skin cells, use of Tea Tree essential oil is one of the most effective remedies for tightening and smoothing the skin, as well as drastically reducing scar tissue.
Some oils, like clary sage, geranium and thyme, help to balance out estrogen and progesterone levels in your body, which can improve conditions like infertility and PCOS, as well as PMS and menopause symptoms. A 2017 published in Neuro Endocrinology Letters indicates that some essential oils, notably geranium and rose, have the ability to influence the salivary concentration of estrogen in women. This may be helpful for women who are experiencing menopausal symptoms that are caused by declining levels of estrogen secretion. (2)
Taken by mouth, many essential oils can be dangerous in high concentrations. Typical effects begin with a burning feeling, followed by salivation. In the stomach, the effect is carminative, relaxing the gastric sphincter and encouraging eructation (belching). Further down the gut, the effect typically is antispasmodic.[14] Typical ingredients for such applications include eucalyptus oils, menthol, capsaicin, anise, and camphor.[citation needed]
Due to its high levels of Vitamin C, lemon essential oil's function as an immune system booster is vital to skin repair and regeneration. Lemon stimulates the white blood cells, increasing the body's ability to not only fight off disease and other free radicals floating about in the body, but it also helps the body produce healthy, new skin cells that will, eventually cover over the old, dead cells in your scar.

Those same anti-inflammatory powers help powdered ginger kill ovarian cancer cells as well as—or better than—traditional chemotherapy, at least in the test tube, found a study by the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Although further testing is needed, Zick and the study's authors are excited about its prospects: "Our preliminary results indicate that ginger may have significant therapeutic benefit for ovarian cancer patients."

Prepare herbs by washing and drying very thoroughly.  Any excess moisture on herbs leads to them cooking and not drying.  Place herbs between two pieces of paper towel and microwave on high for 1-3 minutes. Check the progress every 30 seconds and turn the herbs to insure even drying.  After removing from the microwave place herbs on a rack and allow them to cool before storing.
#4. Bedtime Salt Bowl Method – Place a small amount (about 1/4 cup) of sea salt flakes or Epsom salt in a small bowl. Drip 10-15 drops of your chosen essential oil onto the salt. Keep it by your bed. The salt helps to slow down the evaporation rate of the oils, allowing you a longer diffusion throughout the night. A great way to get some anti-cancer potential into you while you sleep.

Young eventually fired Stirling, citing, among other reasons, the fact that Stirling kept Young out of the company magazine. (A spokesperson said he was let go for “performance reasons.”) “Satan exercised dominion over you to the point where you started thinking that you had knowledge and ability greater than anyone else, including me, the creator of the company,” Young wrote in an e-mail. Young declined to speak to me, but the spokesperson said, “Successful company founders are often cut from a different cloth than the rest of us, which is true of Gary Young and his pioneering cowboy spirit.”

Lipids can be classified by the way that they are made by an organism, their chemical structure and their limited solubility in water compared to oils. They have a high carbon and hydrogen content and are considerably lacking in oxygen compared to other organic compounds and minerals; they tend to be relatively nonpolar molecules, but may include both polar and nonpolar regions as in the case of phospholipids and steroids.[7]

However, there are some pretty not-so-savory things on the internet about D. Gary Young.  Of course, the internet can be full of truths and lies.  But I still think these things might be worth paying attention to. Dr. Stephen Barrett has written a load of unsavory things about D. Gary Young. In fact, this information is a lot of what gave me pause when I initially was looking into signing up with YL.  I mean, the Thieves Oil worked great for me, but I really didn't like what I was reading.

“[I]f you are looking for a natural substance to help prevent or treat cancer, frankincense oil should not be your first choice. Look instead to turmeric/curcumin, to cannabis/cannabinoids, to garlic/garlic oil, and to frankincense extract, which is sold in capsule form. Following that, I would consider essential oils of cinnamon bark, lemongrass, citronella, turmeric, orange, lemon and bergamot.”
Much of the oil sold in the United States comes from two companies based in Utah, Young Living and doTerra, both of which have claimed to be the largest seller of essential oils in the world. The two companies have more than three million customers apiece, and a billion dollars in annual sales. While there are cheaper oils—Walmart sells a kit of sixteen “therapeutic grade” essential oils for thirty dollars—Young Living and doTerra have built their brands on claims that they sell completely pure, naturally derived oils. “They have Skittles,” Kirk Jowers, a vice-president at doTerra, said. “We have the real fruit.”
Personally, I recommend one of our Premium Starter Kits (PSK) because we have 4 different diffuser options. If you are ready to invest and LOVE that Aria diffuser (it plays music! it has lights! it looks gorgeous!) that would be my choice because the diffuser alone normally retails for $304 (so the kit costs less than that and you get all those oils.) If you’re on a tighter budget, I do love the PSK with the Dewdrop diffuser because it’s easy to use and versatile.

Clove essential oil is commonly used as an antiseptic for oral infections and to kill a wide spectrum of microbes to keep disease at bay. To evaluate the effectiveness clove has as an antimicrobial agent, researchers from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, took a look at which bacteria are most sensitive to clove's potency. According to their study, clove has the greatest anti-microbial ability over E. coli and also exerted considerable control over Staph aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, two bacteria that oftentimes lead to pneumonia and skin infections. #1. Bottle Inhalation Method – Begin by holding the essential oil bottle about the level of your heart. Waft the bottle a little, moving it ever closer to your nose. Deeply breathe in the aroma, gently at first. If you like it and it seems appropriate, breathe more deeply. When you breathe in an essential oil through the nose, the tiny oil molecules (the vapor) contain all of the same properties that the oil contains. They interact with the olfactory organ and the brain. Oil molecules inhaled through nose or mouth also move into the lungs and interact with the lungs and respiratory system.
